Garfield, an American comic strip conceived by Jim Davis, originated locally under the title "Jon" in 1976 before achieving nationwide syndication as "Garfield" in 1978. Boasting syndication in approximately 2,580 newspapers and journals as of 2013, Garfield holds the Guinness World Record for the most widely syndicated comic strip.

Set in Jim Davis's hometown of Muncie, Indiana, as revealed in the television special "Happy Birthday, Garfield," the strip delves into Garfield's penchant for laziness, insatiable appetite, particularly for coffee and lasagna, and his disdain for Mondays and diets. Garfield is portrayed as adept at manipulating situations to his advantage.

In August 2019, ahead of its merger with CBS Corporation to form ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), Viacom announced its acquisition of Paws, Inc., securing most rights to the Garfield franchise, excluding the live-action films owned by The Walt Disney Company and the upcoming animated film distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures, except in China. Jim Davis remains involved in creating comics, with a new Garfield animated series currently in production for Paramount Global subsidiary Nickelodeon.
