Jackals are medium-sized omnivorous mammals belonging to the genus Canis, which also includes wolves, coyotes, and domestic dogs. While historically the term "jackal" has been applied to various small canids, in modern usage it typically refers to three species: the closely related black-backed jackal and side-striped jackal found in sub-Saharan Africa, and the golden jackal native to south-central Eurasia, which shares closer genetic ties with other members of the Canis genus.
Jackals and coyotes, sometimes referred to as the "American jackal," are opportunistic omnivores, preying on small to medium-sized animals and scavenging for food. With long legs and curved canine teeth adapted for hunting, they primarily target small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Their large feet and fused leg bones enable efficient long-distance running, allowing them to sustain speeds of up to 16 km/h (9.9 mph) for extended periods.
Crepuscular by nature, jackals are most active during dawn and dusk. The coyote, a native of North America, is slightly smaller than the gray wolf and closely related eastern wolf and red wolf. It occupies a similar ecological niche as the golden jackal in Eurasia, although it tends to be larger and more predatory. Despite its adaptability and wide distribution throughout North and Central America, the coyote is listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to its abundance and ability to thrive in human-modified environments. In recent years, coyotes have expanded their range into urban areas in the Eastern United States and were even sighted in eastern Panama for the first time in 2013.
